Some of the church fathers over read the Bible. They would allegorize; they would read meaning into the text that was not there.
John Chrysostom is an example of this. Someone summarized one of his sermons on Matthew 2, where Herod slaughters the baby boys, as
The fact that only the children
of two years old and under were murdered while those of three presumably
escaped is meant to teach us that those who hold the Trinitarian faith will be
saved whereas Binitarians and Unitarians will
undoubtedly perish!
Interesting. Pretty far-fetched. (Don't throw him out altogether, though. Read him first.)
